Depending on the circumstances, police reports are generally available within four business days following the incident. Police reports, when completed and available, may be obtained at the Records Retention Division conveniently located in the lobby of Police Headquarters. It will be necessary to have the incident number or the date/time of the incident. If an arrest is involved the report will not be released until the court case is resolved. If a suspect’s name is on the incident it will not be released as it may hinder the investigation. If the case has been referred to another outside agency or division it will be necessary to request the report from that agency.

What should I do if I'm involved in a MVA?

By law, you are obligated to report any motor vehicle accident that meets either of the following two guidelines:
   1) It occurred on a public highway (city street) and
   2) Damage was caused
However, in all cases, we strongly recommend that you contact the police to respond and evaluate for your own protection and documentation against possible future litigation.
Contact the dispatch center either by calling 911 or 203-977-4444 to request that an officer be sent to your location. Move to a safe area off the roadway and await the officer. If there are injuries to the occupants of a vehicle or pedestrian indicate that so that an ambulance can also be dispatched. Request the incident number from the officer taking the report. Contact your insurance company. A copy of the incident can be obtained by following the instructions listed above.

How can I commend a member of the police department for a job well done?

Although our employees don't expect to be thanked for everything they do, recognition of exceptional service is always appreciated. This kind of feedback helps us to know if we're doing a good job. The best way to commend the actions of a Police employee is to write a brief letter or an e-mail directed to Chief Brent Larrabee describing the incident and the actions you think were exceptional. Information such as the date, time and location will help identify the employee if you don't know his or her name. If you choose not to write, you may ask to speak with the employee's supervisor and make a verbal commendation.
